RCN - How to change Wifi Name?
RCN WiFi router comes with a default SSID(s). It’s better to change it to your chosen name and password since using default or common SSID, can make it easier for hackers to crack the WPA2 encryption.
The network name is part of the encryption algorithm, and password cracking dictionaries as rainbow tables include common SSIDs.
An SSID is known as service set identifier is a sequence of characters that create a unique name for a wireless network.
SSIDs differentiate one wireless LAN from another, so all access points and all devices attempting to connect to a specific wireless LAN must use the same SSID.
An SSID is also called a network name. If you’re using a different router aside from Linksys these are the steps below to change the name of your WiFi.
What’s a good WiFi name?
Naming your WiFi might seem to be an easy task. Some might opt for something funny like LAN before time or something witty like Modem Family. Having good WiFi might not be very essential like having a strong password but it still would make a difference.
In choosing a good name for your WiFi, it would be best to:
Don’t give away any of your personal information- Avoid choosing a name that would make you identifiable to avoid being an easy target because it contains your info.
Don’t name it as a public hotspot- If you name it as a hotspot, yes it might not point to you but people would always try to connect and your router would then be busy trying to respond to each connection attempt that it won’t have as much processing power left to handle requests in your home.
Always use common sense- Use your better judgment in choosing an appropriate name for your WiFi. The best name ever would come from your original creation always.
